Strong inter-institutional cooperation guarantees strong critical awareness of children and young people in the digital environment
Participants of the Media Literacy and Children in the Digital Environment roundtable concluded today that strong inter-institutional cooperation is needed for systematic work on strengthening critical awareness among children and young people.
The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media organised a roundtable on media literacy as the final activity within the third Media Literacy Open Days, with the aim of bringing together the expert community that works with children and young people in order to exchange experiences and knowledge in this field. The participants’ conclusion is that inter-institutional cooperation should be reflected in the relationship among the institutions of the Republic of Serbia, international organisations, associations of journalists, the non-governmental sector, media and representatives of video sharing platforms, as new stakeholders in the digital environment.
In addition to the host of the event, speakers at the roundtable included Marjan Marinković, representative of the Belgrade City Library, and Łukasz Gabler from TikTok.
The representative of the Belgrade City Library explained the role of libraries as a significant resource centre for spreading awareness of media literacy among all age groups, especially children and young people.
The TikTok representative presented the ways in which this platform encourages media literacy and digital safety of users, as well as ways to combat harmful content in the online world.
In addition to the speakers present, the meeting was also attended by numerous representatives of institutions in Serbia dealing with young people and children, international organisations, associations of journalists, non-governmental organisations, and teachers, who have undergone media literacy training for preschoolers organised by the Regulator.
With this activity, the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media concluded the third Media Literacy Open Days, within which preschoolers’ visits to public service broadcasters and media service providers were organised last week, as part of the Media with Wide Open Doors campaign.
